Britten's St. Nicolas with the Bloomington Chamber Singers

Nick will be conducting the SA treble ensemble for this performance.

St. Nicolas is a dramatic jewel of a cantata by Benjamin Britten that depicts St. Nicolas’ life, faith, miracles, and his enduring legacy. Crozier’s libretto invites the audience to join in singing two beautiful hymns at key moments: ‘All people that on earth do dwell’ and ‘God moves in a mysterious way his wonders to perform.’

Britten’s Ceremony of Carols, Op. 28 is a charming yet sublime work written for treble voices with harp accompaniment. One of his best-known and most-performed works, the carols evoke enchanting atmospheres that range from the freezing, damp cold of an English winter, to gratitude for the dew and birdsong of April, to the wondrous mystery of the Rose (Mary) who bore Jesus.

"Research is crafting a clearer picture on the role of mental health and trauma in our modern world. Choral music provides a unique place to begin to address these present realities. It is essential that we begin to recognize the importance of emotional intelligence, social connection, and trauma-informed instruction in arguably the most personal musical art form. In this session, we will discuss how to craft an educational environment that facilitates excellent music learning, encourages students to remain present, passionate, motivated, and engaged, while creating a space that encourages vulnerability, emphasizes psychological safety, and cultivates connection within the group."
